All things considered, I think Sergi Roberto is a good option for starter squads because of his low price and the links he offers. He's a very well-rounded fullback that is capable in both defense and attack. You could even move him to a midfield role, swapping him with someone like 82 RM Jesus Navas. This review, however, is based on his performances at fullback.
Addressing the obvious concerns with the card first, he is a bit slow and will struggle against pacey attackers. He doesn't quite have the speed to recover after a mistimed tackle. Additionally, he can't jump. Given that crossing doesn't seem to be very effective this year anyway, this wasn't a problem for me. (In fact, I don't recall conceding any goals from crosses, certainly not due to a Sergi Roberto error, in the 25 games I played with him). He is not someone that you want to be taking shots with from pretty much any distance.
In all other areas, he is solid. He is an excellent passer, feels pretty good on the ball, and is generally solid in defense. He has the stamina to run up and down the pitch all game with no problems (which he will do thanks to his H/H work rates unless you set specific instructions to stay back). While he certainly can't bully everyone off the ball, he is more often than not capable of winning the ball with a well-timed tackle. In my experience, he doesn't make any silly errors in defense.
In the attack, his passing makes him very useful for possession-based play styles as he can play through balls and one-twos with attackers in tight situations. He seems to be able to cross about as well as any other fullback with decent crossing.
