yes they have to be from the Basque region to be eligible to play for Athletic club, so basically even if prime Messi wanted to play for them for free they wouldn't want him

imo Athletic club isn't respected enough. Last year they won the kings cup which is a big deal in Spain. this year they're sitting 6 points behind in the title race. yes maybe they won't win the league but being neck and neck with Madrid and Barca is huge when you ONLY play with homegrown playes. not to mention they have a decent chance of winning Europa as well!!
