It looks set to be a pivotal final few weeks for both Barcelona and Real Madrid as they continue to battle it out for the La Liga title. As you can imagine, they dominate this side in a star-studded line-up featuring Mbappé, Vini Jr, Pedri, Bellingham and Lewandowski.
Jan Oblak - GK - 88 > 94 OVR
While the offensive side of this team picks itself, the defensive side requires a lot more thought, starting with the goalkeeping selections. Atletico Madrid have the second-best defensive record in the division with just twenty-seven goals conceded, one more than Athletic Club. Oblak also leads the way with clean sheets, having thirteen to his name, and with seventy-six saves among the top sides, Oblak has had the most to do between the sticks.
Jules Kounde - RB - 85 > 93 OVR
Ever since making the move from Sevilla, Kounde has been a key player in the Barcelona defence, whether that has been as a RB or a CB. This season has seen practically all of the Frenchman’s games come from the RB role. Barcelona have conceded fewer goals than games played, while Kounde has also chipped in with two goals and three assists. An easy selection here.
Inigo Martinez - CB - 81 > 94 OVR
While there will be several claims for Cubarsí, which is understandable with the current youngster hype, I think Martínez is the realistic option here. The Spaniard's move to Barcelona did raise some eyebrows, but the decision has well and truly paid off for them, with his performances this season being impressive throughout. The centre-back role for Barcelona has big shoes to fill, with the likes of Piqué and Puyol dominating the position prior to the new era.
Yeray - CB - 81 > 91 OVR
With Athletic Club obtaining the best defensive record in the division this season, it would be almost criminal to ignore their backline. While their achievements were largely collective, someone still has to receive the TOTS inclusion for me. Although Yeray has missed parts of the season, his influence on the backline when available is clear to see.
Sergi Cardona - LB - 75 > 91 OVR
While you could make a case for Balde in this position, I don’t feel the Barcelona defence has been dominant enough to warrant three of the four spots in the backline. Cardona has been a constant threat for Villarreal, and while their defensive record is not the best, his seven assists really stand out. Villarreal are also a side that deserves credit for their performances this season, which could see them sneak into the Champions League.
Vini Jr - LW - 90 > 98 OVR
Many will argue that Vini Jr should have received the Ballon d’Or this year and while I agree with the decision made I understand why Vini was so popular. This was not the Brazilian's maximum level but Vini has still done more than enough to feature. With eleven goals and five assists Vini has been an ever-present figure in the Madrid attack.
Pedri - CM - 86 > 95 OVR
There is a significant number of attacking players within this side and we need to look towards those who play more defensively, with a couple likely to make the side at least. Pedri is by far the best option for this position, with the Spanish youngster being phenomenal in the middle of the park for Barcelona. With an official POTM to his name it is always a good indication of his consistency, especially for those who are not scoring or assisting large numbers of goals. At just 22, Pedri is likely to have the Barcelona midfield locked down for quite some time.
Jude Bellingham - CAM - 90 > 98 OVR
There are several names in this side that are straightforward selections. Bellingham is another of those. The Englishman has hit the ground running since making the move to Real Madrid. While his initial numbers for the club have gradually decreased, his performances have still remained highly impressive. Bellingham was one of the first names into the TOTY prediction and that easily translates over to La Liga TOTS.
Lamine Yamal - RW - 81 > 97 OVR
It is sometimes difficult to remember that Yamal is still just seventeen years old. The Spaniard broke onto the scene both domestically and internationally and has not looked back since. There is a strong case to be made that Yamal has been the division’s best player this season. He leads the way in assists, recording twelve, while also scoring six himself. We could see a Ronaldo and Messi-esque Ballon d'Or figure emerge from Yamal should he continue on his current trajectory.
Kylian Mbappe - ST - 91 > 98 OVR
Mbappé remains one of the biggest names in world football and, although he may not quite be living up to the expectations set a few years ago, the Frenchman is still among the very best. This season he has scored twenty two goals from twenty nine La Liga appearances. Once again, I cannot see Mbappé being in the Ballon d'Or race, which in reality is what he is striving for. A TOTS inclusion, however, is inevitable.
Robert Lewandowski - ST - 88 > 97 OVR
Since making the move to Barcelona, you do not hear as much about Lewandowski as you used to, but the Polish forward is still banging in the goals. He is currently the league's leading goalscorer with twenty-five to his name. How many more seasons Lewandowski can continue at this magnitude remains to be seen.
Substitutes
Federico Valverde - CM - 88 > 95 OVR
I almost opted to snub Valverde but with his name holding a lot of weight and the fact that it hasn't been a poor season for him, just slightly below what others have attained, I couldn’t bring myself to leave him out. For that reason, I have included him on the bench in what would usually be a defensive option. Valverde has six goals and four assists from the centre of Real Madrid's midfield.
Oihan Sancet - CAM - 82 > 92 OVR
It has been a strong campaign for Athletic Club, who currently sit fourth in La Liga while also reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League. Sancet has played a key role in the attacking side of their game, providing a total of fifteen goal contributions from that CAM position. There is a lot of competition for places in this division, but Sancet should not miss out despite not being one of the household names.
Raphinha - LW - 84 > 94 OVR
There are reasonable arguments to be made that Raphinha should be in the starting eleven ahead of Vinícius, but with Vini’s name and rating I would expect just a bench position for Raphinha. Either way, the Brazilian will be included in this side, having scored fifteen times and provided an additional nine assists. Raphinha has become one of Barcelona’s key players over the past couple of seasons. His talent was always clear to see at Leeds, but I doubt many expected quite the player he has become.
Ante Budimir - ST - 78 > 91 OVR
Not a player you would have expected to see prior to the season, but Budimir is the division's third-highest goalscorer with eighteen to his name. Due to his number of goals, Osasuna are in with a serious chance of European football next season. Despite bigger names also being candidates for this position, it would be a robbery should Budimir miss out.
Honourable Mentions
Alex Baena - LM - 79 > 91 OVR
With Villarreal potentially managing Champions League football next season, having at least one player from their side in this squad seems needed. I feel Pérez just misses out, leaving Baena as the only realistic attacking option. While there are a couple of other wide left midfielder options, Baena has undoubtedly been Villarreal's talisman this season, managing six goals and seven assists from the left.
Isco - CAM - 82 > 93 OVR
We have seen glimmers of Isco back at his best this season for Betis, but a lack of game time likely means he misses out on a direct TOTS position. A moments card seems likely for him, however, having scored eight and assisted five from the limited game time he has had this campaign. I would expect Betis to receive at least one position after their performances, which will likely see them finish in fifth or sixth place.
Julien Alvarez - ST - 84 > 95 OVR
Álvarez seems a very fringe option for me this season, but with Atlético’s strikeforce containing both Álvarez and Griezmann, I would expect one of those to feature somehow within EA’s side. Álvarez is the more deserving of the two, having scored on fifteen occasions, backing up Atlético’s decision to spend heavily on the Argentine.
